CEO appointment – managing a successful outcome…virtually

During the first COVID-19 lock down in New Zealand, Baxter Executive Search completed its first virtual CEO appointment. The entire process, from the initial candidate interview to the final Board interviews, was completed via video technology. The first physical meeting between the Board and the successful CEO was on the CEO’s first day in the role when they met the Chair. It is difficult to imagine an appointment happening like this prior to March 2020. And yet, hundreds of leaders around the world have commenced new roles since the COVID19 crisis. With various lockdowns continuing around the globe, many leaders are commencing their roles virtually. Here we share our experience of a truly virtual executive search process. We share the perspectives of the Chair and the CEO to learn from this experience and understand the benefits and how to mitigate potential risks.
